Coal in the Cellar

Kohle im Keller (original title)

Liesa Schober (author)

It is early morning when Arnd, Henri and Pasquale gather for coffee and cigarettes in a little shed on the yard. A huge citymap of Berlin is pinned to the wall. Henris tattoed forearms are reaching for the thermos flask, while todays orders are being talked through. Street by street a route is fixed and a last cup of coffee emptied before departure. While Henri and Pasquale, the father and his son jump into the car, the boss Arnd remains on the yard. For thirty years the coal hikers of the coal trading company „Braune“ are carrying their brown good to the basements in Berlin. But the profession of the coaltrading is in change. The coal-burning stoves are vanishing and with them the coalhikers. Once the biggest coal yard in the Berlin district of Prenzlauer Berg„Braune“ is now one of the last of its sort. Under these circumstances we accompany the guys in their daily life of back‐breaking work and glance at the supplied households. Whether to the living room of loyal and caring longtime client Ms. Munter or to the garden hut of the neighbour, the coal is delivered: bundled or loose, carried in big wicker baskets, 75kg at once. There is always work to do. But the vanishing of the coal has its´consequences. It forces expansion to a new market. With logwood sold in autumn the company shall be kept alive.Still in its early stage this new idea leads to adventurous and exhausting sessions of wood splitting between father and son. With family intimacy profession goes hand in hand with private life and both is revealed when the men let the days pass in review: almost thirty years of storys of the wild and once exuberant berlin and the coal transforms to logwood
